Synopsis
Sundays and Cybèle (1962) is Serge Bourguignon's French drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Pierre came back from the war in Indochina with his memory in pieces and a guilt he cannot name. A head wound erased part of who he was, and in Paris he drifts through the days half-awake. Everything shifts the afternoon he meets a small girl left at a convent boarding school by a father who never returned.
Sunday after Sunday they slip away to the wooded park of Ville-d'Avray. She calls him her secret friend; he comes back to life beside her; together they invent a private world of made-up names and a promise to bring down the weathervane from the church tower. The town, though, reads their bond darkly, and even the people closest to Pierre cannot quite believe it is innocent. Hardy Krüger plays the wounded veteran, with young Patricia Gozzi as the girl.
Bourguignon shot a film of unusual tenderness about trauma and innocence, where the wintry black-and-white photography carries as much feeling as the dialogue. It took home the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and still ranks among the most piercing French debuts of the decade. If you want slow, poetic cinema that earns its heartbreak rather than a plot-driven thrill, this one fits. Stream Sundays and Cybèle (1962) online on iFILM.
