Synopsis
When We Rise (2017) is an ABC limited series you can watch online on iFILM. Written by Dustin Lance Black — who picked up the Oscar for Milk — and directed by Gus Van Sant, Dee Rees, and others, it covers five decades of the American LGBT civil rights movement, from the late-1960s street protests to marriage equality.
Three parallel stories track real people across their entire adult lives. Cleve Jones arrives in San Francisco in the early 1970s and spends years building a gay community there. Vietnam veteran Ken Jones works through the AIDS crisis without institutional support. Lesbian activist Roma Guy fights city hall while managing her own household. Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Whoopi Goldberg, and Rachel Griffiths play the characters in their later years.
