Synopsis
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) is an American comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by H. C. Potter and starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy as a Manhattan couple who decide that what they really need is to build a home in the Connecticut countryside.
Jim Blandings is a New York ad man cramped in a shoebox apartment with his wife and two daughters. The plan is straightforward: buy a plot, hire a contractor, move in. What follows is a rolling disaster of leaky walls, ballooning costs, misheard instructions and a paint consultation that somehow takes forty-five minutes and still ends in the wrong color. Melvyn Douglas rounds out the trio as the family's dry-witted lawyer, whose presence makes everything funnier and slightly more complicated.
Based on Eric Hodgins' satirical novel, the film nails exactly how homeownership turns from fantasy into controlled chaos — a feeling that has barely aged. Stream Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) on iFILM.
