Ulrich Mott is a young, smooth-talking social climber who marries Elsa Brecht, a well-connected journalist considerably older than himself. Through her, he edges his way into diplomatic circles he has no honest business being in — all while quietly fabricating the backstory that justifies his presence there. Waltz plays this man as something genuinely unsettling: endlessly plausible, never quite readable. Elsa's daughter, played by Redgrave, is the only one in the room who doesn't buy it.

The real Albrecht Muth deceived Washington for two decades. The film examines how he managed it, with more interest in the mechanics of charm than in courtroom drama.
