Synopsis
The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) is a romantic comedy you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Robin Swicord and adapted from Karen Joy Fowler's novel. Six Californians — five women and one man — form a club to read all six Austen novels, one a month. They think they're talking about 19th-century England. They're actually talking about their own lives.
Jocelyn (Maria Bello) drafts the one member, Grigg (Hugh Dancy), who has never touched Austen before. Prudie (Emily Blunt) reads every book as instruction. Bernadette (Kathy Baker) is on her sixth marriage. Each monthly meeting peels back another layer of who these people are and what they want — which turns out to be the exact point of every Austen novel they're reading.
The ensemble also features Amy Brenneman, Jimmy Smits, and Lynn Redgrave. It's a film that rewards patience over plot twists: the pleasure is in watching characters slowly catch themselves being the people they were judging on the page. Stream The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) online on iFILM.
