Synopsis
Man in the Wilderness (1971) is a hard-bitten western you can watch online on iFILM. It draws on the same frontier legend — a trapper mauled by a bear and left for dead — that The Revenant would film decades later.
It's the early 1820s in the American Northwest, and a fur-trapping party is racing the first snow back to civilization. When guide Zachary Bass is torn open by a grizzly, the others write him off and abandon him in the wild. Bass refuses to die. Richard Harris plays a man who crawls, then stands, then trails the people who left him — driven less by revenge than by a stubborn need to understand what a life is worth. John Huston is the expedition's obsessive leader, dragging his cargo through hostile country.
Director Richard C. Sarafian keeps the dialogue spare and lets the wind, the blood, and the endless plains carry it. Anyone who admired The Revenant should meet the older, grittier source of that mood — no digital polish here, just the cold hopelessness of 1971 filmmaking.
