Synopsis
World on Fire (2019) is a BBC wartime drama you can watch online on iFILM. It looks at the opening years of the Second World War from street level — Manchester, Warsaw, Berlin, Paris — following ordinary people whose lives collide as the continent comes apart.
Harry, a young Englishman, is pulled between two women and two countries: waitress Lois waits for him at home while he falls for Kasia in Warsaw, where the bombs land first. American radio reporter Nancy, played by Helen Hunt, broadcasts from inside Nazi Germany and risks everything for an honest sentence. Lesley Manville and Sean Bean carry the older generation, the one that still remembers the last war. The threads run from Polish trenches to the French resistance, and hardly anyone comes out of these years the same.
Writer Peter Bowker built the show as a wide-angle portrait of one historical rupture, assembled from private stories across several nations. It is handsomely made and quietly British, more interested in the cost of a choice than in big battle set pieces. A good fit if you like Downton Abbey or period drama where the home front matters as much as the front line. Stream World on Fire (2019) online on iFILM.
