Synopsis

Seattle, one evening. A college student volunteering at a crisis center answers the phone to find a woman who has taken a heavy dose of sleeping pills. She wants to talk. He keeps the conversation going and quietly tries to get police moving on a trace — without letting her know, because if she realizes what he is doing she will hang up. Telly Savalas plays the detective working the streets from outside, Steven Hill the woman's husband whose account of their life together doesn't quite add up.
Pollack builds the film almost entirely on contrast: Poitier's controlled, unhurried voice against the growing silence and desperation at the other end of the line.
