Synopsis
It's a Free World... (2007) is a Ken Loach social drama you can watch online on iFILM. At its heart is Angie, a divorced single mother from working-class London who has just been fired one more time.
Instead of hunting for another boss, Angie decides to become one. With her friend Rose she opens a recruitment agency out of her flat's kitchen, supplying cheap labour — Eastern European migrants willing to take any job on any terms. The business grows alarmingly fast. But the more money comes in, the more often she cheats the people already living on the edge: holding back wages, packing workers into shabby housing, looking the other way on those without papers. She isn't a villain. She's prey to the same machine that now runs on her hands.
The script comes from Loach's regular collaborator Paul Laverty, who took the Best Screenplay award at the 2007 Venice Film Festival for it. Kierston Wareing plays Angie with zero sentimentality — you can neither forgive her nor fully condemn her. It's the kind of film that leaves you arguing over where survival ends and exploitation begins. Stream It's a Free World... (2007) online on iFILM.
