Quatermass and the Pit
World in panic! Cities in flames!
Synopsis
Quatermass and the Pit (1967) is a British sci-fi horror you can watch online on iFILM — Hammer Film Productions' adaptation of Nigel Kneale's landmark BBC serial, directed by Roy Ward Baker. What looks like a wartime bomb buried beneath a London Underground dig site turns out to be something far older.
Professor Quatermass, played by Andrew Keir, and scientist Barbara Shelley piece together the evidence: the capsule is a Martian spacecraft, sealed underground for five million years. Inside are the remains of ancient insect-like creatures. The real trouble starts when the ship begins transmitting — not signals, but visions, driving workers into violent trances.
The film's core argument — that Martians genetically altered early humans, and that everything humans call supernatural is inherited memory of their alien engineers — was bold for 1967 and still holds up as science fiction with actual ideas behind it. Stream Quatermass and the Pit online on iFILM.
