What?

What? (Che?, 1972) is Roman Polanski's surreal sex comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A young American hitchhiking through Italy barely escapes an assault and washes up, with no luggage and no papers, at an opulent villa above the Mediterranean.

The house is full of eccentrics, each lost in some private absurdity. The girl (Sydne Rome) drifts through its rooms, shedding clothes as she goes, trying to work out one simple thing: what on earth is going on. An aging charmer named Alex — Marcello Mastroianni, all faded swagger and ex-pimp menace — keeps circling her. The more she asks, the less anyone answers.

Polanski made this right after Macbeth, under producer Carlo Ponti, and pops up himself in a small role. Bawdy, ramshackle and proudly nonsensical, it plays like Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups and has spent decades parked on lists of his strangest work. Stream What? (1972) online on iFILM.
