Synopsis
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) is Billy Wilder's detective comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Robert Stephens plays Holmes not as infallible genius but as a complicated man — moody, private, occasionally wrong — and Wilder builds a story around the gaps that Conan Doyle deliberately left unexplored.
The case arrives in the form of Gabrielle Valladon, played by Geneviève Page, who shows up at Baker Street asking Holmes to find her missing husband. His brother Mycroft — Christopher Lee, on screen briefly but impossible to ignore — warns him to stay out of it. Holmes ignores the warning. The trail leads to the Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness, where a government secret has been hiding behind a monster story for years. Colin Blakely's Watson is warm, loyal, and consistently kept in the dark by a partner who treats honesty as a professional hazard.
The studio cut nearly an hour of Wilder's footage before release, and the film still carries the shape of something larger. What remains is sharp, wry, and genuinely melancholy at the edges. Stream The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) online on iFILM.
