Synopsis
How Green Was My Valley (1941) is John Ford's family drama, free to watch online on iFILM. In a South Wales coal town at the turn of the century, the Morgan family works the pits while the world around them slowly changes. We see all of it through Huw, the youngest of six, looking back on a valley not yet blackened by the colliery.
His father and older brothers go down the mine; his mother holds the home together. The quiet rhythm cracks when talk of a strike splits the family — the sons want fair wages, the father refuses to rock the boat. As Huw grows up, his sister Angharad (Maureen O'Hara) falls for the new preacher Mr. Gruffydd (Walter Pidgeon), and the community begins to fray. Roddy McDowall plays young Huw, turning a child's memory into the film's true subject.
Ford built the whole village on a California hillside and recreated Wales from memory, then took home five Oscars, Best Picture among them — famously beating Citizen Kane. One for anyone who values quiet, hard-earned nostalgia over easy sentiment. Stream How Green Was My Valley (1941) online on iFILM.
