Synopsis
The Odessa File (1974) is a British-German political thriller directed by Ronald Neame, available to watch online on iFILM. Hamburg, December 1963. Journalist Peter Miller — played by Jon Voight — comes across the diary of an old Jewish man who has just taken his own life. The diary names an SS captain who ran a concentration camp. And that captain is still alive, living under a new name somewhere in postwar Germany.
The organisation protecting him is called Odessa — a network of former SS members who have quietly rebuilt their lives and careers across industry and government. Every lead Miller follows brings him closer to a man who should have faced a tribunal decades ago, and closer to the people who will kill to keep that from happening. Maximilian Schell plays the quarry: cold, meticulous, certain he has already won. Voight plays a man who perhaps hasn't thought this through.
Frederick Forsyth published the novel in 1972, and the film keeps its procedural tension — the sense that the machinery of escape and protection was real, not invented. Stream The Odessa File (1974) online on iFILM.
