Gentleman Jack (2019) is a BBC and HBO historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, created by Sally Wainwright with Suranne Jones in the lead. West Yorkshire, the early 1830s: Anne Lister rides back into Shibden Hall, her crumbling family estate, and immediately starts running it like no Lister before her — negotiating coalmine leases, overseeing construction, managing tenants, and doing all of it on her own terms.

Alongside the business of reviving the estate, Anne sets her sights on Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle), a neighbouring heiress who has no idea what she's getting into. The nickname "Gentleman Jack" was attached to the real Lister during her lifetime — for the way she dressed, moved and refused every social script written for women of her class. Wainwright drew the scripts directly from Lister's private diaries, portions of which were written in a cipher she invented herself.

Jones plays Anne without softening the edges — she is brilliant, often ruthless, and occasionally insufferable, which makes her impossible to look away from.
