Synopsis
Howards End (2017) is a four-part BBC Two and Starz miniseries you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Hettie Macdonald. Hayley Atwell, Matthew Macfadyen, Julia Ormond, and Tracy Ullman star in this adaptation of E. M. Forster's 1910 novel.
Three families, one house. The Schlegels are cultured idealists — sisters who believe connection matters more than money. The Wilcoxes are wealthy and unsentimental, with no patience for that kind of thinking. The Basts are a lower-middle-class couple, Leonard and his wife, whose lives tip further downward after a careless word from the Schlegels. Margaret Schlegel, played by Atwell, sits at the centre: the one person who understands all three worlds, and the one most exposed because of it.
Forster's novel asked whether idealism can survive money and power. Macdonald's adaptation keeps the question alive without resolving it.
