Synopsis
"Film Socialisme" (2010) is a Swiss film by Jean-Luc Godard, available to watch online on iFILM. The New Wave founder structures it as a symphony in three movements — the concept of plot abandoned somewhere in the first few minutes, subtitle text used as a parallel argument rather than a translation.
The first movement unfolds on a Mediterranean cruise ship where philosopher Alain Badiou, singer Patti Smith, a retired double agent and a Palestinian ambassador share the deck. The second is a late-night reckoning: a brother and sister summon their parents to answer for Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. The third takes the camera to six sites carrying their own mythological weight — Egypt, Odessa, Athens, Naples, Barcelona, Palestine.
Godard made this at seventy-nine, and it carries the impatience of someone who stopped explaining himself decades ago. Demanding and rewarding in roughly equal measure. Stream "Film Socialisme" online on iFILM.
