She comes out of the scanner able to hear people's innermost feelings — not as words, but as fully choreographed pop songs performed right in front of her. Her colleagues, her friends, and her father (Peter Gallagher, dealing with a progressive neurological illness) all break into song without knowing it. Zoey alone sees the performances, and slowly realises they're telling her things the people themselves can't say out loud. Her best friend Max (Skylar Astin) and neighbour Simon (John Clarence Stewart) each have their own unspoken tracks playing.

What makes the show worth watching is how seriously it takes both halves of its premise — the elaborate musical numbers choreographed by Mandy Moore, and the quieter grief storyline running underneath them.
