Synopsis
Enlightened (2011) is an HBO tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. After a meltdown in front of her whole office, Amy Jellicoe (Laura Dern) checks into a Hawaiian treatment center and comes home transformed — serene, spiritually "awakened," and determined to fix everything and everyone around her.
The catch is that nobody asked her to. Her drug-addled ex-husband (Luke Wilson) is barely coping, her guarded mother Helen (played by Dern's real-life mother, Diane Ladd) keeps her at arm's length, and the company buries her in a basement data team full of corporate castaways. Amy's new gentleness is by turns moving and maddening; the series never lets you decide whether she's a heroine or a self-absorbed woman papering over old wounds with the language of self-help.
Created by Mike White (later of The White Lotus) and Dern herself, who took home a Golden Globe for the role. Eighteen quietly uncomfortable episodes across two seasons. A small, sharp show for anyone who likes prickly heroines and bitter irony with no tidy redemption. Stream Enlightened online on iFILM.
