Synopsis
The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (1955) is a Mexican black comedy by Luis Buñuel you can watch online on iFILM. As a child, Archibaldo de la Cruz convinced himself that a music box he owned could kill women. It happened twice. He never stopped believing it.
As an adult (Ernesto Alonso), he turns that childhood logic into an ambition: he will become a celebrated killer of women. He chooses targets, sets his traps, closes in — and every time, something goes wrong. The intended victim dies in an accident before he arrives, or walks away without ever knowing she was in danger, or simply ceases to be available. Buñuel makes each failure funnier and more vertiginous than the last, letting the comedy carry a real undercurrent of menace.
Filmed in Mexico in 1955, among the most fertile years of Buñuel's career, the film operates at the junction of noir and surrealism without fully belonging to either. Miroslava and Rita Macedo give the targets a visual precision that makes Archibaldo's repeated failures feel both absurd and strangely fitting.
