Detective Chan has spent years protecting the daughter of a murdered witness, and his obsession with bringing down crime boss Po has blurred every line he once stood for. Incoming unit chief Ma is built differently — methodical, by the book — and what he finds when he takes over Chan's squad disturbs him. A rookie officer catches the wrong end of all this, and the triangle tightens until it can only snap. Fight choreographer Kenji Tanigaki engineered the confrontations with the kind of tight-contact realism that was unusual for the genre at the time; the climactic bout between Yen and Wu Jing became a reference point for Hong Kong martial arts filmmaking in the decade that followed.
