Synopsis
Man of La Mancha (1972) is a musical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Arthur Hiller from Dale Wasserman's stage adaptation of Cervantes, which ran over two thousand performances on Broadway from 1965. Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren lead the cast.
Spain, 16th century. Playwright Cervantes is thrown into an Inquisition dungeon with his manuscript and his manservant. Fellow prisoners move to burn the papers, so Cervantes mounts an improvised defence: a full theatrical performance of the manuscript, with him playing both the aging author and his invention Don Quixote. Loren is Aldonza, a tavern worker Quixote addresses as the noblewoman Dulcinea — a renaming she finds insulting, then slowly begins to accept. James Coco is Sancho Panza, loyal and baffled in equal measure.
The whole argument of the piece is whether noble delusion beats clear-eyed despair, and O'Toole makes sure the answer is never obvious. Stream Man of La Mancha (1972) online on iFILM.
