Synopsis
The Stranger (Lo straniero, 1967) is Luchino Visconti's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Adapted from Albert Camus's novel, it stars Marcello Mastroianni as Meursault, a low-level clerk in Algiers who drifts through his own life with unsettling detachment.
It opens at his mother's funeral, where he sheds no tears. Then come the small ordinary things — a romance with Marie (Anna Karina), drinks with a neighbor, the white glare of an Algerian beach. And then a gunshot. Meursault kills an Arab man for almost no reason, as if the heat blinded him before his conscience could speak. At trial, the court cares less about the killing than about a defendant who feels no guilt and refuses to fake remorse. That refusal is what condemns him.
Visconti handles the cornerstone of absurdist literature with restraint, telling the story of a man who won't lie about what he feels — and pays for that honesty with his life. Mastroianni plays it cold and flat, which only deepens the chill. Slow, literary and deliberately uncomfortable, it's for viewers ready to sit alone with Camus.
