Synopsis
The Winslow Boy (1999) — watch online on iFILM. David Mamet's adaptation of Terence Rattigan's Edwardian courtroom drama is quiet, precise, and harder than it looks.
Fourteen-year-old Ronnie Winslow is expelled from the Royal Naval College on suspicion of stealing a five-shilling postal order. His father Arthur — Nigel Hawthorne — believes the boy without question and decides to fight. He hires the country's most celebrated barrister (Jeremy Northam), burns through his savings, strains his wife to the edge, and costs his daughter Catherine (Rebecca Pidgeon) her engagement — all to pursue a case the establishment would rather see quietly closed.
Mamet's screenplay strips away sentiment and lets the silences do the work. What makes it interesting is not whether justice arrives, but what the pursuit of it costs — and whether the family still agrees it was worth it by the end. Stream The Winslow Boy (1999) online on iFILM.
