Rex and Saskia are driving from Amsterdam to France for a holiday. At a busy rest stop she steps inside for drinks and simply doesn't come back, gone in broad daylight without a trace. Three years later Rex (Gene Bervoets) has a new partner, yet the not-knowing eats at him worse than grief ever could, so he papers the area with posters. Then a letter arrives from the man who has the answer. Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu plays the abductor as a polite family man whose calm is the real horror.
The film scares through cold logic rather than gore, building to a final reveal that knots your stomach. Stephen King called it one of the most frightening movies he'd seen, and the 1993 Hollywood remake, made by the same director, lost every ounce of that dread.
