Synopsis
Santiago, Italia (2018) is Nanni Moretti's documentary, ready to watch online on iFILM. Across eighty minutes it returns to what unfolded in Chile from 11 September 1973, the day soldiers toppled elected president Salvador Allende and General Augusto Pinochet seized the country.
Moretti gathers the people who lived through those first terrified weeks and found shelter behind the gates of Italy's embassy in Santiago. Diplomats hid hundreds who faced arrest or a bullet outside, then shipped them safely to Italy. Former prisoners, journalists and grieving relatives speak straight to the lens, one after another, no booming narrator over the top. Period newsreel cuts in, and now and then the director himself joins the conversation.
At heart this is a film about a foreign land becoming home for the hunted. Moretti never hides where he stands — his sympathy sits plainly with the rescued, and he owns it. A quiet, humane piece with no staged reenactments. Stream Santiago, Italia (2018) online on iFILM.
