Synopsis
David and Lisa (1962) is an American drama to watch online on iFILM — Frank Perry's first feature, shot on real locations rather than a studio lot, produced for well under $200,000.
David arrives at a residential home for troubled adolescents with one non-negotiable rule: no touching. He flinches at handshakes, backs away from the crowd. Among the other patients is Lisa, who exists in two states — one that speaks entirely in rhyme, one that says nothing at all. Both are completely isolated. They find each other anyway.
Perry adapted the screenplay from psychiatrist Theodore Isaac Rubin's case study of the same name, keeping the clinical detail intact. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. What holds it together isn't the romance but the careful, patient observation of two people slowly learning to be near each other. Watch David and Lisa (1962) online on iFILM.
