Synopsis
Life of a King (2013) is an American drama directed by Jake Goldberger, based on a true story, available to watch online on iFILM. Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Eugene Brown, a man who walked out after years of incarceration with no money, no connections, and a janitor's position at a Washington D.C. high school.
He didn't set out to teach anyone anything. But when a teacher goes missing and Brown is asked to cover an after-school group, he introduces the kids to chess — partly out of necessity, partly because he knows the game himself. For teenagers who have grown up in a neighborhood where the wrong call can wreck everything, learning to think three moves ahead turns out to matter. What started as an improvised afternoon activity Brown later built into the Big Chair Chess Club. Dennis Haysbert and Lisa Gay Hamilton appear in supporting roles.
The film doesn't sentimentalize either Brown's past or the lives of the students — and that restraint is what makes it land. Stream Life of a King online on iFILM.
