Synopsis
No Way to Treat a Lady (1968) is an American black-comedy thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jack Smight and based on William Goldman's 1958 novel. Rod Steiger plays Christopher Gill, a theater impresario with a grudge against his famous actress mother and a growing habit of strangling women in disguise.
Each murder comes with a different costume — Irish priest, German tourist, plumber, Greek beauty consultant. Each murder also comes with a phone call to Detective Moe Brummel (George Segal), because Gill needs someone to appreciate his work. Brummel barely has room in his head for a serial killer: his mother (Eileen Heckart) rings constantly to remind him that his brother became a successful doctor. Then a witness named Kate Palmer (Lee Remick) enters the picture, and things sharpen.
Steiger switches masks but keeps the same restless, needy energy underneath — that consistency is what makes the performance funny and faintly horrible at once. Stream No Way to Treat a Lady (1968) online on iFILM.
