Synopsis
Mrs. Dalloway (1997) — watch this adaptation of Virginia Woolf's 1925 novel online on iFILM. Dutch director Marleen Gorris, fresh off her Academy Award for Antonia's Line, compressed Woolf's famously interior novel into 97 minutes without losing the double timeline.
Clarissa Dalloway (Vanessa Redgrave) spends a single June day in London getting a party ready. That's the surface. Underneath, she reckons with the choice she made decades ago: she married Richard, the safe politician, and let Peter Walsh (Michael Kitchen) walk away. Today Peter is back. Running parallel is Septimus Warren Smith (Rupert Graves) — a shell-shocked veteran whose story never touches Clarissa's but quietly mirrors it. Natasha McElhone plays the younger Clarissa in the film's memory sequences; Lena Headey appears as Sally Seton.
Gorris keeps the crosscuts between decades clean, and Redgrave carries the weight of a woman who chose correctly and has been wondering about it ever since. Stream Mrs. Dalloway (1997) on iFILM.
