Synopsis
Made in Hong Kong (香港製造, 1997) is Fruit Chan's crime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. After his father walks out, teenage Autumn Moon quits school and starts collecting debts for the Triads. Then he and his friends stumble on the body of a girl who jumped, a suicide note still in her hand.
The find shakes something loose in him. He falls for Ping, the daughter of a debtor whose kidneys are failing; her treatment costs money he doesn't have. So Moon signs on for a contract killing and sinks further into the underworld, chased all the while by the memory of that dead girl. Sam Lee carries the lead in his first screen role.
Chan shot the whole thing on short ends — leftover film stock begged from other productions — with a mostly amateur crew. It was his first feature after Hong Kong's handover to China, and it aches with the dread of a generation with nowhere to go. Raw, jittery, closer to street poetry than to a slick gangster picture. Fans of nineties Asian arthouse will take to it. Stream Made in Hong Kong (1997) online on iFILM.
