Synopsis

Normandy, 1944, weeks before D-Day. Marie is stuck in her family's crumbling château, married to Jérôme (Philippe Noiret), a man too absorbed in his property to notice his own wife. A German officer billeted in the house has noticed. Then a charming stranger arrives, claiming to be Marie's brother — he is actually working for the Allied underground, and his mission falls apart the moment he meets her. Pierre Brasseur rounds out the cast as the estate's sardonic elder presence. Light in touch but sharp in its portrait of a woman taking stock of her choices, the film holds up as one of the better French wartime comedies of its era.
