Escape from Mogadishu

Escape from Mogadishu (모가디슈, 2021) is a South Korean action thriller directed by Ryoo Seung-wan — watch it online on iFILM. January 1991. Civil war engulfs the Somali capital. Streets collapse into firefights, communication lines go dead, and the South Korean embassy staff find themselves completely cut off.

Then the North Koreans knock on their door. The two delegations — rivals under any normal circumstance — are equally stranded, and neither group can get out of the city alive on its own. What follows is a joint escape through the burning streets of Mogadishu, negotiated between people who have spent careers working against each other.

The film draws from real events: South and North Korean diplomats did evacuate together in the chaos of January 1991. Director Ryoo keeps the political irony in the background and puts the physical escape front and center — the action sequences in the final act are some of the most precisely choreographed in recent Korean cinema.
