Synopsis
Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (2009), Jan Kounen's drama of a secret affair, is available to watch online on iFILM. Two people who rewired the taste of the twentieth century — she cut the modern woman's dress, he remade what music could sound like.
Paris, 1913. The premiere of The Rite of Spring erupts into a riot, the audience jeering, and from her seat Chanel sits transfixed by the score's nerve. Seven years later the composer, a penniless exile from Soviet Russia with his wife Katarina and four children, accepts Coco's offer to stay at her villa outside Paris. Under one roof, desire flares — forbidden, nearly wordless, and quietly ruinous for everyone near it.
Anna Mouglalis plays Chanel as flint-hard and unreadable; Mads Mikkelsen's Stravinsky fuses his hunger for the woman with his hunger for the work. Kounen shoots it spare and stylish, all Art Deco surfaces and long silences. The film closed the Cannes Festival and suits anyone who loves restrained European dramas about art and obsession.
