Synopsis
The Villain (Le Vilain, 2009) is a French black comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Albert Dupontel. A bank robber with armed rivals chasing him hides in the one place nobody would look — his mother's house, on the sleepy street where he grew up. Except the street isn't sleepy anymore.
A greedy developer is buying up the block to flatten it for a shiny new banking district, squeezing the residents out by any means. Leading the holdouts is elderly Maniette — the robber's own mother. He just wants to lie low and slip away; she's determined to drag him onto the side of the angels. What follows is a war of dirty tricks: her clever schemes against his nasty little traps.
Dupontel takes the lead role himself, and Catherine Frot as the unbreakable mom is a joy to watch. The humor is mean, absurd and very French, with a warm pulse hidden under all the cynicism. One for fans of oddball comedies that aren't for everyone. Stream The Villain (2009) online on iFILM.
