Synopsis
"The Color of Lies" (Au cœur du mensonge, 1999) is a French crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Claude Chabrol shoots Brittany as a closed system — a fishing town where everyone knows everyone, and a ten-year-old girl has just been found murdered.
René, her art teacher and the last person to see her alive, falls under suspicion before the inspector has found a single piece of evidence. He's an outsider, and in a small town that's enough. Rumors run through the local bar, his students stop coming, neighbors look past him. Jacques Gamblin plays René with a quiet helplessness — a man being tried socially long before any courtroom. Sandrine Bonnaire is his wife Viviane, a district nurse who holds the marriage together as the pressure builds. Antoine de Caunes plays a self-absorbed celebrity writer who arrives and makes things worse.
Chabrol takes his time. What he's examining is the mechanics of collective suspicion — how a village can convict someone before a word is spoken in a courtroom. A second body changes the register entirely. Stream "The Color of Lies" (1999) online on iFILM.
