Synopsis
New Order (Nuevo orden, 2020) is a Mexican political thriller you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Michel Franco. The film claimed the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and at 86 minutes it offers no soft landing.
A lavish wedding at a wealthy Mexico City household is overtaken by events outside: a class uprising has reached the gates. Marianne, the bride, slips away from the party to help a former servant, and that decision pulls her directly into the violence. When the military moves in to suppress the revolt, what comes next turns out to be more ruthless than the riot itself. Diego Boneta and Naian González Norvind lead the cast through a story that has no interest in reassuring anyone.
Franco refuses to assign moral clarity to either side, which is precisely what makes the film uncomfortable to sit with. It functions as a near-future scenario drawn from present-day Mexico — the wealth gap, the uniforms, the impunity — rendered in a flat, almost reportorial visual style that makes the brutality land harder.
