Synopsis
After Lucia (Después de Lucía, 2012) is a Mexican drama by Michel Franco you can watch online on iFILM. Months after losing his wife in a car crash, Roberto moves to Mexico City with his sixteen-year-old daughter Alejandra to start fresh — a new restaurant job for him, a new school for her.
At first her classmates are friendly. Then one private video spreads from phone to phone, and within days the girl becomes a target. The bullying builds quietly and methodically, almost matter-of-fact, which is exactly what makes it unbearable to watch. Tessa Ia plays Alejandra with a frightening stillness; Hernán Mendoza is the father so lost in his own grief that he never sees what is happening to her. Between them sits a silence neither one dares to break.
Franco shoots in long, fixed, music-free takes, and that cold distance cuts deeper than any swelling score would. The film won the top prize in Cannes' Un Certain Regard. It's a hard sit, but an essential one for anyone ready for an honest look at teenage cruelty and parental blindness. Stream After Lucia (2012) online on iFILM.
