The Pervert's Guide to Ideology
We are responsible for our dreams
Synopsis
The Pervert's Guide to Ideology (2012) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Sophie Fiennes. Its sole guide and narrator is Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek, who picks apart how movies quietly assemble the beliefs we think are our own.
Žižek refuses to lecture from a podium. Instead he's dropped straight into the sets he discusses — riffing on A Clockwork Orange and Jaws, perched in the Titanic's rowboat, slipping into the skin of Taxi Driver. Through those scenes he traces how Hollywood plots, advertising and even revolutionary anthems sell us a ready-made way to desire and obey. Ideology, he argues, isn't somewhere out there; it lives inside what we mistake for personal taste.
This one is for viewers who enjoy watching pop culture dissected like a lab specimen: 131 dense, playful minutes that wire Kafka, soda and totalitarianism into the same circuit. Its tagline says it plainly — "We are responsible for our dreams." Stream The Pervert's Guide to Ideology (2012) online on iFILM.
