This Is Not What I Expected

Zhou Dongyu and Takeshi Kaneshiro lead This Is Not What I Expected (喜欢你, 2017), a Chinese romantic comedy to watch online on iFILM. Directed by Xu Hongyu, the film pairs Lu Jin — a meticulous hotel executive who arrives to audit everything in sight — with Gu Shengnan, the hotel's sous chef who cooks the one meal that stops his critical eye cold.

They share almost nothing in common. Except food. Gu's cooking is the crack in Lu's careful exterior, and the whole romance is built around that opening. Kaneshiro and Zhou carry a lot of predictable ground between them without it ever dragging, and the food cinematography is a reason to watch in itself.
