Synopsis

Polynesian sailor Terangi (Jon Hall) throws a punch at a colonial guard in self-defence and gets prison. His wife Marama (Dorothy Lamour) and the whole island community petition the rigid governor (Raymond Massey) for clemency; he refuses. Community pressure, escape attempts, a lawyer's arguments — nothing works. Then the storm comes. Effects artist James Basevi engineered a sequence of astonishing practical scale, and Ford frames the destruction as the one answer colonial authority couldn't stonewall.
