Synopsis
Record of a Tenement Gentleman (1947) is a Japanese comedy-drama from Yasujiro Ozu — watch online on iFILM. Made in the months immediately after Japan's surrender, the film is set in the cramped, still-standing tenements of a bombed-out Tokyo neighborhood.
Tane is a middle-aged widow who resents disruption. When her neighbor Toshiro shows up with a stray boy named Kohei — lost in the city, possibly abandoned — Tane tries every door on the block looking for someone to take him. Nobody takes him. By default, the boy stays with her. Ozu holds the warmth at arm's length for most of the film: Tane is genuinely cold, visibly irritated, not performing reluctance. The shift arrives in a single small action, with no music underneath it, which is why it carries the weight it does.
