Synopsis
War of the Arrows (최종병기 활, 2011) is Korean director Kim Han-min's historical action film — watch it online on iFILM. The year is 1636 and the Manchu forces have pushed into the Joseon kingdom. When their soldiers raid a village and drag off a young woman named Cha-in and her fiancé, her brother Nam-yi picks up his father's bow and follows.
Nam-yi is an archer. Not a soldier, not a commander — just a man with a recurve bow moving through forest and open country, tracking a military column that outnumbers him by hundreds. Word of a lone shooter picking off soldiers from the trees reaches the Manchu commander, who sends his own best marksman out to intercept him. Park Hae-il and Moon Chae-won ground the human stakes; the pursuit takes care of the rest.
What Kim Han-min gets right is the specificity: wind, distance, angle, the weight of an arrow at range — the mechanics of archery become the mechanics of the plot.
