Synopsis
Under the Sun of Satan (1987) is a French religious drama you can watch online on iFILM. Maurice Pialat adapts Georges Bernanos's novel into a stark study of a priest whose faith tips over into torment.
The young abbé Donissan wears himself down with fasting and sleepless nights over his books, unsure he's fit to lead a parish at all. On a dark country road he meets a stranger he comes to recognize, with horror, as Satan himself. Soon a sixteen-year-old girl named Mouchette seeks him out — she has shot her lover and carries the ruin of it inside her. Donissan wants to save her soul, yet his words only push her nearer the edge, and he shoulders the blame for what follows.
Gérard Depardieu plays the abbé as a man stretched to breaking, no halo in sight; Sandrine Bonnaire is the desperate Mouchette, and Pialat himself turns up as the parish dean. The film took the top prize at Cannes — the 1987 Palme d'Or — a win the festival crowd met with open booing. It's severe, uncompromising work about grace and despair, and no easy night in.
