Synopsis
Under the Sand (Sous le Sable, 2001) is a French psychological drama directed by François Ozon, available to watch online on iFILM. Marie and Jean have spent their summers on the Atlantic coast of the Landes region for years. One afternoon he goes for a swim and never comes back. Marie drives home alone. And then just — continues.
Charlotte Rampling gives one of the more unnerving performances in recent European cinema here: Marie doesn't grieve, she refuses. Jean still seems to occupy every room she enters. She sets two places at the table, holds full conversations with him, and deflects every attempt by a new man in her life — Jacques Nolot as Vincent — to make her face what happened. Ozon shoots the denial with a flat, naturalistic calm that makes it feel more disturbing than any breakdown would.
The film was a French-Japanese co-production that earned Rampling a César nomination and established Ozon as one of France's most unsentimental chroniclers of loss. Stream Under the Sand (2001) online on iFILM.
