The three bumbling soldiers are back on French soil, and German command has not gotten any better at dealing with them.

Pouillet, Bisson and Chouchou — played again by Jean Lefebvre, Pierre Mondy and Henri Guybet — stumble through occupied France with the kind of cheerful incompetence that tends to accidentally work out. The trio's chemistry is the engine: one frets, one schemes, one breaks everything. At 75 minutes the film moves quickly and wastes nothing.

Lamoureux keeps the tone exactly where it was in the 1973 original: warm and absurd rather than cynical, treating the war as a backdrop for very human foolishness on all sides.
