Synopsis
A Raisin in the Sun (1961) is Daniel Petrie's drama you can watch online on iFILM — the story of the Youngers, a Black family crammed into a tiny apartment on Chicago's South Side.
When the father dies, a ten-thousand-dollar insurance check lands, and suddenly everyone pulls the money a different way. Walter Lee, ground down by his chauffeur job, wants to sink it all into a liquor store and finally feel like his own boss. His sister Beneatha is saving for medical school. Their mother Lena wants just one thing — to trade the rented box for a house of their own. Trouble is, the house she finds sits in a white neighborhood, and the neighbors are already offering cash to keep the family out.
The film grew out of Lorraine Hansberry's play, the first Broadway production written by a Black woman. Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil and Ruby Dee carry over the roles they first played on stage, and it shows in how fully they inhabit them. A quiet, durable picture about dignity, ambition and the cost of a front door. Stream A Raisin in the Sun (1961) online on iFILM.
