Synopsis
Meeting Gorbachev (2019) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Werner Herzog and André Singer.
Herzog sat with Mikhail Gorbachev three times, letting him speak on what he himself considers his defining acts: the nuclear arms talks with Reagan, the choice not to hold Eastern Europe by force, and the German reunification. Archival footage and interviews with Lech Wałęsa, Miklós Németh and George Shultz map the wider period around those decisions.
Herzog's approach is that of a filmmaker, not a policy analyst — he is interested in the person behind the record. What that produces is a portrait of an 87-year-old who knows history is still arguing about him and has decided he can live with that.
