The White Diamond

The White Diamond (2004), Werner Herzog's documentary about obsession and the jungle, is available to watch online on iFILM. British engineer Graham Dorrington spent years designing a teardrop-shaped airship to hover above the Guyanese rainforest canopy — a stretch of wilderness once filmed by his colleague Dieter Plage, who died in an accident during a shoot.

Herzog doesn't just cover the test flight. He sits with local fishermen on stilted houses, lets Marc Anthony Yhap describe a rooster that survived a hurricane, and allows the jungle to fill the frame with something closer to dread than wonder. The airship matters less than the question underneath it: what makes a person keep building something that might kill them, toward a place that has already taken someone they knew.
