Synopsis
The Hands of Orlac (Orlacs Hände, 1924) is a silent Austrian horror you can watch online on iFILM. Celebrated pianist Paul Orlac loses both hands in a railway disaster. A surgeon saves him by grafting on a donor's hands — but the man they came from was an executed murderer.
Back home, Orlac can no longer play and grows terrified of his own palms, convinced they move with a will of their own and reach for a knife. Conrad Veidt, the sleepwalker from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, carries the whole part with almost no words — just his body, his trembling fingers and a frozen stare. His wife is desperate, a sinister stranger prowls the house, and the line between a cracking mind and a real curse keeps dissolving.
Director Robert Wiene, a master of German Expressionism, adapted Maurice Renard's novel into one of the defining horrors of the silent era. Its uneasy shadows, warped sets and Veidt's haunted performance inspired several later Hollywood remakes. This is for viewers who love the genre's roots and don't mind the slow, hypnotic pulse of early cinema. Stream The Hands of Orlac (1924) online on iFILM.
